Feeling Unaccomplished

So, my "to do" from yesterday? Not so much.

1. interviewing ran over by 3 hours... and he was 30 minutes early. Grrrr.
2. major metldown at work that I needed to fix
3. ran out to get food for Miss Pumpkin
4. cooked yummy BBQ chicken for PC and I
5. walked to get Ff/SF frozen yogurt
6. knit 6 rounds on my sock, but not at SnB b/c I was too tired to go
7. stayed up too late.
8. forgot to take a tea photo (will try to sneak that in tonight!)

What I did get done?
1. 3rd arm project underway (it's attached to PC... he's so helpful!)
2. laundry
3. fed myself, PC and the cat
4. slept
5. kissed PC

Is it just me? This may be TMI (and I'm sorry if it is), but I still get that butterfly-tingle-ohboy! feeling in my belly when PC kisses me... I know it's a good thing! Every so often, I look at him and think... "wow. i'm so in love with this man" I think it's b/c if you asked me 5 years ago if I thought this was possible,I would have said no. (must be Spring... I'm getting all romantic... or that we are going to a wedding tomorrow... that too).

Look for another update later!

Oh, I need to send my SP something soon!

I won!

I won!

I would like to thank the Academy,my family, of course my PC (couldn't have done it without you babe!) and God.

Oh wait. Wrong speech. Nevermind.

I WON! (reminder, I have won ONE contest in my life and it was at Deb's)

So, Ms.Bookish... I tried to email you (my browser won't let me... it says broken link) so I can get my prize, but alas... no luck. Anyone have her email? Tell her I am looking for her? Thanks!

Dad is HOME. Yup, in comfy pants (he so happy to be wearing pants!) and eating popsicles and mashed potatoes on the couch in front of the 60inch HDTV. The dog has not left his side since he got home. Dad's happy, Rascal's happy, doctors are happy... mom... dunno. I think she's worried that she can't care for him properly.

I am going to continue to post my updates but hopefully the knitting will be the only showcase. I am going through "stuff" in my personal life and I need to address it. I took a positive step and did something for me. I need to do more of this. But, I need to not be a spoiled stubborn brat too (PC knows what i am talking about). I don't know exactly how to balance this. Rent's due. Bills are due. Car needs new brakes. And I haven't gotten my review yet. Sigh. At least the rate increase is retro-active (it's been a month!).

I need to :
1. finish the sock tonight at SnB
2. call the vet
3. interview a candidate for a job here
4. get a tea stash photo going for tomorrow's post
5. grow an extra arm
6. stop time
7. kiss PC again.

Gonna be a long day.

Long Ass Post (and well overdue)

Wow...it's been a bit, huh? Normally, I would be apologizing, but I don't have the energy. It's been nothing but run-run-run since last week. In the hospital, out of the hospital. Feed the cat, feed the dog, feed the humans. Run-Run-Run.

We are ALL very tired and cranky. (she looks so cute all balled up and sleeping... almost makes up for the cat hair everywhere and getting "scratched awake". ALMOST.)

Dad: dad is recovering from his surgery (for those of you who know/care: it was an esophagectomy that they had to do by going from his chest to his belly button and then around to his back. He lost a rib. They deflated his lung. They moved his heart. They took his esophagus and his stomach (a 3rd of each). ) He was a trooper. He spent a few days in ICU (god bless those nurses) and he had his first ice-pop of the summer in there. Orange. He was very happy. VERY Happy. He's up on a "regular" surgical floor now. He's had his epidural removed, his chest tube is out and the drain from his stomach is gone. He's eating chicken broth, jello, sherbert and apple juice. He's asked for a slush---watermelon. My mom is obliging him today.

Let me explain about ice-pops and slush. Ice-pops are NOT popsicles. They are the ones in the plastic sheath and you have to cut them open and push them up. I could live on Ice-Pops. :) Slush is a Metro North of Boston thing. It's like Italian Ice, but it's not. It's not even close to a Slush puppy or a Hawaiian ice. Nope. It's this weird semi-solid intensely flavored ice with the sugar in it. It's good. Richie's or Spadafora's makes the best. A slush should cost a $1.50 and give you a headache if you eat it too fast. You can lick it, spoon it, and slurp it (oh, the google hits...).

Ahh... something else happened this weekend and I have to tell you that it is all due to my Secret Pal. (you rock, FYI). I got this little snail mail package in the mail on Friday and it was from my secret pal. I open it up and two small objects came out: a crocheted fish and a crocheted mouse (yes, it looks like a carrot... and *blush* we call it the carrot--- she will go find it if we say "where't the carrot?") for PUMPKIN! Oh, my. Well, we have spent a good amount on cat toys and I have even knit a mouse from CHERRY TREE HILL sock yarn for her (leftover, but still!) and she was on this fish and mouse like white on rice! My Secret pal sent me some tea (yes, it was heavenly!) and some cat food/litter/treats coupons. Now, this last part made PC laugh. He says my SP knows me all too well b/c I am the coupon queen. I am. I am cheap. (SP- you are not cheap, I am not insinuating anything, I love a woman who thinks one the same wavelength as me!) Well, perhaps "frugal" is the right word. I buy generic, use coupons and keep our little house in good food for very little money. Now, coupons. I know for a FACT that companies PAY to put their coupons in the flyers, to get them to print out at the register... so, they WANT you to USE them. So, I do. We save quite a bit too. I know it bothers PC b/c sometimes it comes off as Scrooge-like. But, I do it so we can go on better vacations and do more fun things.

fish and mouse/carrot in repose. She took them out to the dining room with her and left them like this.

Dear SP of my Mom,
thank you for the fish and mouse/carrot. I love them. I love to chase my mouse/carrot and pretend it's prey. I take my fish with me when I sleep under the bed covers. Mom finds it there. She gets mad. Then I attack the fish and she laughs. I love to carry them around the house. I like to have the mouse/carrot thrown from room to room and run after them. I do my best Michael Jackson Thriller imitation with these toys. Thank you for sending me them.

Snuggles and nose kisses,
Pumpkin

I put this up against her to show you her size. The fish is about 2 1/2 incehs long. My cat's small.

Speaking of fun things: I am seeing Michael Ian Black tonight. He's very funny, but I only get 1/2 the jokes. PC likes him-- he loves dry obscure Canadian/British comedy. I always say I can never tell if he and his dad are making fun of me or being serious. I tread lightly with these two because I don't get the jokes.

This my favorite picture of her. This the face that wakes me up and says "Momma! Feed me!"

Very curious cat. Hangs out in the tub alot. Also has begun attacking us when she is playful and we ignore her. :)

Knitting: I am done with the petal socks. I am writing a pattern for my own socks. Anyone want to test knit them for me? I am thinking of sending to MagKnits or Knitty or selling them myself. But, I am going to need test knitters and some pictures of the socks. :) Email if you are interested! It's a very simple cabled design, but it's a little different.

More photos tomorrow, if I can knit tonight. Should i knit during Michael Ian Black? Probably not. I'll be comedian fodder. I am an overweight girl with a penchant for bright colors so I am already a moving target.

Happy knitting!

Actual Knitting Content

I know, it's amazing. Actual knitting. I have been knitting, I just haven't been knitting "on the blog".

But, before all that. Tomorrow is Dad's surgery. If you are faithful, please say a little prayer for him and my mom -- they celebrated 39 years of marriage and 47 years together this May. I don't know what one would do without the other. If you aren't faithful, please just think good thoughts tomorrow. My mom's family is a little superstitious (PC would say "a lot") and tomorrow is also my Nana's birthday. She would have been 95. She used to tease my father alot and we think it's a good sign that he has her with him on this day. She would never let anything happen to hurt my mom. Me, I am in a daze. I have been walking around like the dead this weekend. I am exhausted and just emotionally drained. I need to sleep for 24 hours and I still don't think it'll help.

On happier news, the cat is acting like a cat. She's cranky and sometimes playful. This morning she was so hungry, she was jumping on PC's head. Oh, very funny story about her. Last night, we went to bed and she hopped up and got between us. In the middle of the night, PC decided he was colder than the rest of us and took all the blankets. The cat and had been snuggled up against me and she moved to him b/c, well, he had the blankets! So, he rolled over (away from her) and she lost her covers. She reached over and stuck her claws in his ass. He rolled over, she and I got our blanket back and we went to bed. PC woke me up this morning and said "I think the cat scratched my butt" I said "no, she stabbed you in the ass so you would give the covers back." :) I knew she was on my side. :)

Here is a sock bag that I got over at Trek's (she's swapping them if you want one!)

Oh, what's inside? A finished Petal sock and one that is at the heel. :) I think i might finish it tomorrow at the hospital.

NH Sheep and Wool

Looked like fun. Read around blogland that the Festival was fun. Was I there as planned? Nope. It was wayyyyy too soggy for this girl to leave the comforts of home. :) I did go and get a manicure and pedicure after running errands with PC. And then, he and I went exploring in the town next to us and I found this:

Oh. My.

I found the yummiest cashmere (no, I didn't buy it) called Lobster Pot. It's locally dyed here in Mass. I bought enough for 2 more pair of socks out of Lang Bebe. What the heck right? It's fingering weight, superwash and comes in very pretty pastels. Perfect for the lacy socks from IK? Or the Cascading Leaves?

Mom's Day. It went well. I had a minor emotional breakdown in the midst of the aftermath. I won't bore you with details, but PC: I love you and respect you more than I ever thought I could love or respect someone. :)

My mom got a crochet book, a size G hook and two balls of yarn from me: one Encore acrylic and one Schaefer Miss Priss. Now she can be a Happy Hooker (oh the google hits!). I know, I know... "teach her to knit!". I TRIED that... she is knitting deficient.

I am almost to the heel on Petal socks #2. I am hoping to have them done for the SnB on Thursday. Keep thinking good thoughts for dad. I have some photos but I keep forgetting either the camera or the cord. I promise: Soon!

Oh, and if the rain here in Boston was snow? over 110 inches.

Finally Friday

For all of my non- New England peeps, it's raining in Boston. It's been raining for awhile. Like days. If it's not raining, it's foggy and dreary and "raw" feeling. And it's taking a toll on me. I never thought I was someone who "needed sunshine" (yes, I need the Vitamin D and K) but I am not even motivated to work (and i like my job).

But, it is great weather for knitting. I knit on the new sweater (Bombshell from Big Girl Knits--- great book... even when I am at "goal weight" the "gals" will still need extra shaping... this book is fab if you are over a C cup or shaped like a woman) while at the MetroWest Knitting Guild meeting on Wednesday. (Hi Ann!)

A few thoughts on this guild:
1. I was the youngest person there. And no one cared. There are some amazing knitters there and I see this guild (particularly) being a more organized SnB. They were very friendly and I laughed pretty much the whole time. :) I saw an example of the Great American Aran. Oh.My.God.
2. I really liked the semi-structure to it. Sure at SnB on Thursdays, we chat about yarn, patterns, and how much one needle sucks over another, but we rarely talk about KNITTING. Do you see the difference? I am happy for it,b/c I can see how discussing your hobby/passion could ruin enjoying it. I like to sit, knit, have a cuppa. This is SnB. The guild, more organized. There was a theme this week- stuff you need help on.
3. Did I mention friendly? This was like sitting down with a bunch of girlfriends immediately. It's funny b/c I have always ignored age barriers for friends. I think once you hit a certain age (for me it was 24), you realize that there is a huge amount of "life experience" differences between ages, but very little else. I like these women. I'm going back. Heck, PC and I talked about me going to their annual retreat (sounds like a lot of fun!!!)

Overall: A+ these women are outstanding knitters. I saw an aran I want to make. Perhaps she has the pattern? I'll ask next time!

SnB: went last night. Finished a sock. Cast on for Sock #2. This is the 1st sock I have knit for me that fits me PERFECTLY. It's snug ( I have to tug it on) and petal-y and perfect and pink-y. I can't wait to make #2. Hopefully with the rain and no going to NH sheep and wool ( it's going to be 50 deg F, raining, and windy... and PC doesn't drive. It's a long stressful drive for me. sorry)

So, no pictures b/c I left the camera cable at home. Tonight I'll try to hook up the camera to PC's PC. no promises. maybe I'll just bring home my laptop.

Well, Pumpkin slept through the night last night. When our alarm goes off at 5:15 a.m., she rolls out of her ball and stretches and looks at PC like "are you gonna get that?"... then she comes up to see me... and get warm again. She's coughing harder now and sneezing less. I feel so bad for her!

More this weekend! (If i am not heading to NH, I am heading to Black Sheep in Needham and maybe A Good Yarn in Brookline!)

Baa Baa Black Sheep

Have you any wool? Anyone going from Boston area? I am thinking of heading up and petting the sheep. I am torn though; I want to go to my 1st fiber festival, but I need to clean my house and get ready for Mom's Day Brunch...

And it's going to rain. Hmm.. wet sheep must smell like wet wool.

Let me know if you are going!

Tonight: 1st guild meeting. Have zero idea of what to expect from this. Mother hen types wanting to laugh at my use of color? Or more like my new favorite thing (SnB Thursdays) and very cool women who are just immediately your "peeps" and laugh with you when you drop stitches and want to consider it a design element b/c you might have to put down your coffee to fix it.

Either way, I'm there.

Work is minorly frustrating right now. And we are in the midst of some new "documentation procedure changes" so that means I can't find ANYTHING. I want to cry or at least go home and play with Pumpkin.

Pumpkin--- how can such a small cat command such a large area of the bed? We weren't going to allow her to sleep with us... that lasted all of 3 minutes. She's acting like a cat now. She almost bit PC last night and she could care less about me when "he" is home. Oh, and does anyone else have a cat that likes the bathtub? Not with water... just gets in there and sits. Oy.

Dad: surgery scheduled for next Wed. Please, all the knitters out there, please think happy good knitterly thoughts for my dad. He's going to need it. He is having the most difficult surgery performed for tumor removal. He will have a lung deflated and his heart moved, along with one (or more) ribs removed. This is big. Scary and big. I will be knitting at the hospital with my mom... holding her hand and being there for whatever she needs.

Mom's Day Brunch : here is my menu (feedback appreciated!)

Fruit Salad
Mixed green salad with cranberries-feta-almonds and champagne dressing
Baked French Toast (casserole)
Bacon/Ham/Cheese/Potato Quiche
Banana Bread Muffins
Mimosas
Coffee/Tea

My mom, PC's mom, PC's dad and PC and I--- 5 peeps. Should be enough food. :) My dad is spending his last pre-op days in Florida with my brothers. He wants to golf and be with his boys. It's important to him. I'll see him a lot more post-op than they will I am sure.

Have a great knitting day!

Secret Pal 8 questionaire

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I like wool yarns... I have been itching to try a silk blended yarn. I don't like 100% acrylic. Some are better than others... not a huge fan of novelty yarns, but I have used a few successfully.
2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I have some cigar boxes I use and I need to devise a new way to store them... I have made needle holders, just not for me.
3. How long have you been knitting? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
all together? hmm 10 years? off an on would equal 10. I am an intermediate knitter.
4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Nope..
5. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)
Lavender, vanilla, clean laundry and pumpkin

I like country, rock, some punk and classics like Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and now, Michael Buble....
9. What's your favorite color? Or--do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?
I love all colors, I wear a lot of orange and pink and blues. I look good in purple. I hate anything "neon" and I don't like contrary colors together (like black and white)
10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
PC and I live together with Pumpkin, the super kitty. We are "new parents" to her. She's 3 and kinda indifferent.

Everything but the poncho
12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
YES! I am always blown away by other people's creativity
15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
Circulars! I like bamboo and Bryspun, but I knit socks Magic Loop, so I love size 1 and 0 32 inch Addis!
16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
Both...
17. How did you learn to knit?
My godmother taught me
18. How old is your oldest UFO?
a year?
19. What is your favorite holiday?
CHRISTMAS!
20. Is there anything that you collect?
tea pots and yarn.. ha ha ha
21. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

steeking... I am dying to make a Norweigan sweater!
23. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
Yes! I have size 8 1/2 - 9 (US) feet... I like snug socks.
24. When is your birthday? (mm/dd)
10/09

Well, I am also in the Knitters' Tea Swap and I need to take a photo of my tea stash ... look for it tomorrow, with a photo of the Super Kitty!

Elisabeth (who commented ) was absolutely right! Pumpkin needed to be shaved and then checked with a magnifying glass for scars. :) Email me your snail mail and I will mail you a skein of yarn.

Everyone else, look for a 2nd contest at the end of the month. :)

Back to Our Regularly Scheduled Blogging...

Yup, we are getting "back to normal" around these parts. A few things I want to share with all you peeps on the internets...

1. I am doing "selfish" knitting. KNitting for moi. Baby blanket? on hold. Socks? going on. Mom's sweater? on hold. Cute sweater from new book? cast on and almost to the armpits. :) There is a lot behind all of this and to make a VERY long story short: I'm never selfish. (PC will agree with conditions) So, I want to knit for me. :) I am working on making me happy (see more about this later)

2. I joined 2 knitting groups! I will be attending my first MetroWest Knitting Guild meeting (Monica... do you belong to this one?) this Wednesday. I am soooo excited! Oh, and I joined a local SnB.. and oh my goodness... I felt immediately at home! :) What a wonderful group of women + 1 guy... they are funny, witty, good natured and are able to talk about EVERYTHING.
3. PC and I became "parents" this weekend. Yup. To a FUR-BABY! We adopted a 3 year old cat named "Pumpkin". She's the color of Maple Syrup and so teeny tiny. We think she was a runt. Also, I need some help from all the cat owners out there. (ahem... Sandy? Laurie? Wendy?)

a. we were told that she was 3 years old and "fixed"
b. she appears to be in heat ( a lot of bum rubbing on her part... moving her tail for "access" and she's ...oh, this will get me some google hits... oozing a little from her who-ha?)
c. she has great affection for doing this to PC

I will have pictures of the Pumpkin soon. She is getting used to us and vice versa. She came out of hiding Saturday night (we got her around 4... she started to completely act normal last night) and we thinks she loves us. I was never a "cat person", but this one stole my heart. Now, here is a BIG question:

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF SHE'S BEEN FIXED?

A skein of yarn to the first person who tells me a clear, scientific (i.e. look here, feel there) non-icky (I'm not sticking anything anywhere) way to tell if she's spayed.

Her prior owners were in a hurry to dump her at Angell and leave her there. They were required to fill out a "personality" thing on her, one question being "is she spayed?" They said yes. I think they lied. I need to know. Cause if so... she's going back to the shelter to get fixed. We cannot have all the neighborhood cats in the yard looking to see if Pumpkin can come out and "play." Oh, and she isn't interested in my yarn. At all. *yay*

More photos and knitting updates tomorrow.

:) Mini and PC....oh, and Pumpkin too!

Oh My Achin' Feet

... what is wrong with you? According to a podiatrist, an ultrasound, an MRI, X-rays and mucho-mucho blood analysis... nothing. Yup, "take of the cast and don't finish up the antibiotic".

Hmm.

But, it still hurts.

Suggestion 1. Seek alternative therapy--- massage
Suggestion 2. Seek second opinion--- gave me # of doctor

I called the massage therapist. I have an appointment for 60 minutes of "mini time" tomorrow. Maybe my hips will feel better... I have been 5 feet tall on the right side and 5'2" on the left for a week!

Knitting: notsomuch. Friends and their kiddos came by yesterday for some much needed visiting... and PC and I should have taken a day off to recover! Do we really want children?

Tonight, I am strapping on my sneakers and going for a walk. If it doesn't rain. We are expecting rain here in Boston. Yuck. We need it though.

Some photos tomorrow... I didn't knit, but I bought knitting books this weekend. :)
